Polocrosse club starts training sessions at new home

-

THE YORKSHIRE Warriors Polocrosse Club held its first training session of the season at its new home in Doncaster.

The club, which started in 2018, was able to meet at Bawtry Polo Club for a practice session conducted under social distancing and the Polocrosse governing body guidelines.

Club secretary Kate McKee said it had been quite a momentous occasion and the pitch rode “absolutely beautifully”.

“It is beyond exciting for the Yorkshire Warriors to have been able to set up at Bawtry,” she said.

“Not only do we have a truly quality pitch and some excellent coaches affiliated to the club, the polo school with its lovely hire horses on site means we have a clear route into the sport for people too.”

Polocrosse, as its name suggests, is a combination of polo and lacrosse played on horseback. Each rider has a racquet with a net which the ball – made of sponge rubber – is carried in.

There are two teams and the objective of the game is to score goals by throwing the balls between the opponent’s goal posts.

Miss McKee said having the facilities to hire horses would help open the game up to new riders who may not have their own horses or who just wanted to give it a go.

She said the club was very friendly and sociable with riders bringing their horses – which varied in breed and type – and enjoying an afternoon’s sport.

She said: “We put the kettle on and enjoy a really nice afternoon alternating training and sitting about in the sunshine with horses and friends.”

With the pandemic it is uncertain if any tournaments will go ahead this year but Miss McKee said if any happened it would be “brilliant” but they were all “extremely grateful” to just be able to practice.
