Simpson to leave Terriers, Barnsley duo snub contracts

- STUART RAYNER

DANNY SIMPSON will leave Huddersfield Town after Sunday’s trip to Nottingham Forest, and Kenny Dougall and Sami Radlinger have rejected contract extensions at Barnsley.

Simpson joined as a free agent shortly after manager Danny Cowley’s arrival in September and was part of the side beaten at home to Wigan Athletic on Saturday, but has rejected a short-term extension to his contract, which runs out on Tuesday.

Kamil Grabara was the Terriers’ first-choice goalkeeper until a nasty head injury in late January caused them to sign Jonas Lossl, also on loan. With Grabara not featuring since, Liverpool have decided to recall him.

Joel Coleman, now Lossl’s deputy, is one of seven players to sign short-term extensions, but with Huddersfield only a point above the Championship relegation zone with eight matches remaining, Town feel unable to commit for next season.

Elias Kachunga, Jon Gorenc Stankovic, Collin Quaner, Demeaco Duhaney, Rekeil Pyke and Ryan Schofield are the others.

Lossl, Emile Smith Rowe, Chris Willock, Andy King and Trevoh Chalobah’s loans have been extended.

Simpson, who is 33, started 24 matches this season, and was substitute for another.

“He made a big contribution at a vital time and we respect his decision,” said Cowley, who has offered Under-19 centre-back Oran Thompson an academy coaching role.

Radlinger started 2019-20 as Barnsley’s first-choice goalkeeper and had another run in the side from late November to late January. He and Dougall were on the bench for Saturday’s 1-0 win at Queens Park Rangers, though only the latter came off it.

Dani Pinillos and Mamadou Thiam have been released after the Reds failed to move them on in January, along with Jared Bird and Jake Greatorex.
