Hague blows last two holes and drops into a five-way tie

- NICK WESTBY

THE TITLE of Max Golf Protein Masters champion on the 2020protour was shared by five players yesterday.

Ben Hutchinson (Howley Hall), Garrick Porteous (Barnburgh Castle), Nick Marsh (Huddersfield), Torren Matthews (Oulton Hall) and David Hague (Malton and Norton) all posted a round of five-under par 67 at the 18-hole event at Wakefield Golf Club.

They share the top prize on the gender equal tour of £740 each.

It is the second time Hague has had to share the spoils, having split the pot with Nick Poppleton in the first event back after the coronavirus-enforced shutdown of sport, at Cleckheaton last month.

This time, though, he will be

kicking himself. He stood on the 17th tee on seven under par but bogeyed the last two holes to drop back into the tie at five under.

He was not the only one to do so, Matthews also had a 65 in his sights with two holes to play, but he too bogeyed the closing two holes.

Sixth place on its own went to Marcus Armitage, winner at Oulton Hall three weeks ago, after the European Tour player from Howley Hall posted a four-underpar 68.

Three amateurs were in the tie for seventh on three under par, Dan Bradbury and Ewan Bromley of the host club Wakefield putting local knowledge to good use alongside Sam Bairstow of Hallowes.

Order of Merit leader Poppleton shot a one-under-par 71, one behind Harrogate’s John Parry.

Leading female for the second week in a row was Brogan Townend who shot a 73.

The 2020protour moves to Rockliffe Golf Club in Darlington on Monday, July 20.
