Expansion of airport should be welcomed

-

From: Dr David W Whittle, Leeds.

AT last a sensible proposal to enhance our local Leeds Bradford Airport (The Yorkshire Post, July 7) – hopefully including the Parkway Station.

Do the naysayers not see that this godsend of an airport brings in thousands of jobs to the local area? This fantastic facility on our doorstep allows easy links to all of Europe and is only 20 minutes from the doorstep of over 1.5 million Yorkshire folk of Leeds and Bradford.

There are also multiple roads available to get to Yeadon. If one blocks, there are many others.

Yes, there will be some extra noise and pollution but this is preferable to the one-and-a-half hour drive to Manchester over the M62, never quite knowing if you’ll miss your flight due to an accident, or the hour to get to Doncaster Sheffield airport.

When Covid is over, we will need jobs, we will need holidays, we will need freight transportation and we will need salvation from lockdown.

FOR some weeks now, you have featured articles and letters from the promoters and from the opponents of the proposed new terminal at LBA. Strong opinions on both sides.

But one important thing I have noticed is that there doesn’t even seem to be any agreement between the two sides about what the proposals actually do or do not include.

Is there to be an increase in the permitted number of flights? Are the hours of usage to be extended?

Are noise limits proposed for increase? Only if we know what the facts are, can we hope to understand the arguments.

Instead, both sides seem to be indulging in an “oh yes it is, oh no it isn’t” repartee more suited to a pantomime. I’d have hoped they were more grown-up than that.
