More Yorkshire derbies the merrier for Millers manager

- BEN MCKENNA

ROTHERHAM UNITED manager Paul Warne hopes to see as many Yorkshire clubs as possible remain in the Championship next season.

The Millers were promoted from League One via a pointsper-game method, to make an immediate return to the second tier after they were relegated in the 2018-19 campaign.

Hull City need a mathematical miracle to avoid the drop after picking up just six points from their last 19 games.

Barnsley’s dramatic victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday gave them hope of pulling off the greatest of escapes and Warne is hoping to have plenty of local derbies next season.

“I like to see local clubs do well, I know Rotherham fans won’t want me to say that, but I do,” said

Warne. “It is less overnight trips and less hotels, which is great news.

“Barnsley have had a right good go at it. I would like to see the local clubs stay in.

“Us and Barnsley keep missing each other, so it would be nice if we could have a game.”

Warne feels that his side is “six to seven” players from being able to be a competitive force in the Championship.

The transfer window will be open until October 5, although many clubs will struggle to do business due to the financial impact of the coronavirus.

Warne is well aware of the need to be sensible and insists he will not sign a player if it threatens the Millers’ future.

“I will never take a decision that is going to put us in financial problems,” added Warne.

“We are trying to get players in to improve what we have already got and we are treating the chairman’s money like it is our own.

“Hopefully in a few weeks’ time we will know a little bit more and when fans are allowed back.

“Going into the Championship, the injection of money for joining the league will help us.”
