Four held as trouble mars Leeds United title celebration

-

FOUR ARRESTS were made and a police officer injured as trouble broke out during celebrations to mark Leeds United’s return to the Premier League.

Hundreds of supporters gathered outside the Elland Road stadium on Wednesday as United played their last Championship match of the season behind closed doors, beating Charlton Athletic 4-0.

The club had asked supporters to celebrate at home because of the coronavirus pandemic but with hundreds of people gathered by the East Stand a decision was made to allow the players to display the championship trophy from a static open-top bus at the ground.

The club said “a brief appearance from the players” would help to “signal an end to proceedings, encouraging fans to head home safely”.

Superintendent Jackie Marsh, of Leeds District Police, said: “This operation saw a total of four people arrested for public order offences. One officer received a minor injury which did not require hospital treatment.

“While most of those who gathered did so with good intentions, there were some missiles thrown which resulted in officers having to wear protective equipment.

“Assaults on police officers will not be tolerated and enquiries will be made to identify those responsible so appropriate action can be taken.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool celebrated winning the Premier League behind closed doors at Anfield.

Fans gathered outside the ground despite warnings to stay at home. A heavy police presence was in force outside the stadium as the club played Chelsea on Wednesday night in their final home game of the season.

Police introduced a 48-hour dispersal zone around the ground in anticipation of the crowds.
