Ready to provide goal threat on move to Owls

- STUART RAYNER

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY’S first signing of the summer, Fiyusho Dele-Bashiru, has promised to bring pace, power and an eye for goal to Hillsborough.

The 19-year-old central midfield player has joined on a threeyear contract from Manchester City.

Dele-Bashiru, brother of Watford’s Tom, is yet to play firstteam football, although he did feature in City’s development side in last season’s Football League Trophy, including 90 minutes against Bradford City at Valley parade. He has also played in the Uefa Youth League, scoring against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Being unable to break into Manchester City’s midfield as a teenager is hardly a disgrace either, and coming through the Premier League club’s academy means he has considerable pedigree.

Posting about the move on Instagram, Dele-Bashiru gave his new supporters an idea of what to expect.

“I’m at an age now where I want to be playing first-team football and I am confident it will fall into place for me here,” he wrote. “I know there are other players in the same position but competition for places is a positive.

“My game is about power, strength and pace, I like to go box to box and I like taking on a shot, too.

“The manager (Garry Monk) has shown a desire to bring me to the club and that means a lot. He has a good CV and I’m sure this is the right platform for me at this stage of my career.”

Monk will be looking to reduce the average age of what was the Championship’s secondoldest squad last season, and he also has to rein in spending after years of the club gambling to try to get back into the Premier League without doing so.

The Owls’ top Championship scorer from central midfield was Massimo Luongo, with three.

■ Paul Cook has resigned from his role as Wigan manager.

The 53-year-old was unable to keep the Latics in the Championship after they were hit with a 12-point deduction for entering administration.

It saw Wigan drop from 13th to 23rd on the final day, but an appeal against the sanction will be heard tomorrow.

Cook took over in May 2017 and led the DW Stadium side to the League One title during his first season.
