Celebrate Yorkshire Day online with us, says this year’s host town
STORYTELLING, MUSIC, dance and a film premiere are among the celebrations planned by this year’s official Yorkshire Day hosts in Rotherham.
The annual event, organised by the Yorkshire Society, changes location each year and the South Yorkshire town takes the honours today.
A range of activities has been organised but will take place online because of coronavirus restrictions.
The Mayor of Rotherham, Coun Jenny Andrews, said despite the event taking place virtually, she would be wearing her robes and sporting a white rose,.
She said: “Mainly it’s about lovely people. We just want everyone to celebrate, however they can. We’ve done as much as we can. We just hope people can focus on Yorkshire Day and celebrate because we’ve had such a hard time with the coronavirus and we want to show Rotherham can still celebrate and be the host.”
She will also have a Zoom call with Yorkshire expatriates now living in New Zealand.
At 11am, online viewers will listen in to a speech from Coun Andrews, followed by brass band music from regional musicians and the Rotherham Music education service.
There will be storytelling from 11.30am, with Brigg the Dragon, written and told by Carmel Page.
At noon there will be a dance performance from Young Minds Together and at 12.45pm a song written especially for Yorkshire
Day, Yorkshire Relish, will be performed by its writers, The Glummer Twins. Another story written and told by Carmel Page, Penhill the Giant, will be online at 1pm. Brandon Walton’s specially recorded performance for Yorkshire Day will be aired at 1.30pm,
At 2.30pm, it will be time for cookery as the BAMER Creative Network shows how to make Asian-style Yorkshire puddings and there will be another Yorkshire Day exclusive performance from Lauren Housley with Thomas Dibb at 2.45pm.
At 3.20pm there will be the premiere of Our Rotherham, Our Yorkshire, a film featuring a poem written by a collective from Hive South Yorkshire.
