Cooler days forecast – but the heatwave could return

-

THE WEATHER is forecast to turn cooler over the next few days following a heatwave which saw the UK record its hottest day ever.

Yesterday saw “perfect conditions” for rainbows, the Met Office said, as bright sunshine seen in parts of Yorkshire was interspersed with showery spells. But across southern areas in the country, there were renewed concerns as visitors flocked to beaches over the weekend in search of the sun.

The Coastguard had its busiest day for more than four years on Friday as temperatures peaked, dealing with more than 300 incidents.

In Scarborough, multiple rescue teams from helicopter to lifeboat scoured the coast to save a young boy who disappeared from sight in the South Bay on Saturday.

The 10-year-old was pulled alive from the water after nearly an hour.

A spokesman from the Coastguard said: “He helped us save his life by following the advice ‘float to live’.

“Paramedics checked him over and then he was able to return to his parents.”

As Friday’s warmer weather continued over the weekend, some authorities had urged people to stay away from beaches.

The leader of Thanet District Council, in Kent, Coun Rick Everitt, said the area’s beaches had seen “exceptional” numbers of visitors, warning there was a finite capacity to keep people safe.

“We’re getting greater numbers than we’ve ever seen since package holidays became a thing,” he said.

This week’s weather is set to return to more seasonal climes with highs of 20C in Yorkshire today ahead of blustery showers through Wednesday, although there are suggestions the heatwave could return to Yorkshire in time for next weekend, with early forecasts suggesting temperatures could reach as high as 28C.
