Activists’ ‘ banshee’ stunt to highlight ‘ unjust’ new tunnel

-

ECO- REBELS DRESSED as banshees rallied outside the Transport for London headquarters in a show of anger at the construction of a new tunnel.

Extinction Rebellion has branded the forthcoming twinbore road, which will pass under the Thames from Silvertown to Greenwich, ‘ racist, colonial and unjust’ because it will cause pollution in deprived areas with a high BAME population.

Campaigner Jonathan Fuller explained on Facebook that two local XR branches joined forces to pull off the eye- catching stunt.

Earlier, activists staged a Titanic- themed dinner party in the sea to shine a light on global warming as part of a series of weekends over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Separately, the group is to hold what it describes as a “theatrical Bankers’ Tea Party” in Sheffield to highlight the impact major banks have on climate change.

The protest will happen on Fargate in Sheffield city centre at 11.30 tomorrow, with organisers marching from Union Street with samba accompaniment beforehand.

The group said it wanted to show that banks “are making large profits for their shareholders by investing the public’s pensions and savings in risky fossil fuel projects that accelerate global warming, destroy the environment around the world”.

It added: “These investments cause global suffering, particularly for indigenous people whose lands are destroyed and poorer communities throughout the world.”
