COVID: Labour has accused the Government of neglecting to tackle the coronavirus crisis as the party set out its plans for rebuilding Britain.
At Labour’s virtual conference yesterday, deputy leader Angela Rayner said Boris Johnson’s “failure and incompetence” meant Britain was heading towards a second lockdown.
LABOUR HAS accused the Government of neglecting to tackle the coronavirus crisis as the party set out its alternative to rebuilding Britain after the pandemic.
Speaking at Labour’s virtual conference yesterday, deputy leader Angela Rayner said Boris Johnson’s “failure and incompetence” meant the country was heading towards a second national lockdown.
She said: “He only knows one approach – denying that problems exist and then blaming other people for his own incompetence.
“We are facing a second spike ( in Covid- 19), further restrictions and the prospect of another national lockdown because of his failure and incompetence.” Shadow Chancellor Anneliese Dodds will today set out Labour’s alternative three- step approach for building a better Britain,
Ms Dodds will say: “Recover jobs, retrain workers and rebuild business.
“Three steps to a better, more secure future. Government working hand in hand with business and trade unions, in the best interests of our country.
“This is an ambitious Labour vision – where security and fairness aren’t just aspirations, but
where they are a reality for families and communities across our country.
“New leadership so people can have hope for the future, with a government that they can trust, not one which plays political games.”
She aims to contrast Chancellor Rishi Sunak handing over public money to support businesses with no strings attached, in stark contrast to the more careful policies pursued by other countries.
Ms Rayner said yesterday that the Government’s “serial incompetence”
is holding the country back. She said: “Over the next three days, we will show what we can achieve with a new leadership for our party and for our country.
“At this time of national crisis, we are offering the country the leadership it needs.
“We will act in the best interests of the British people and in our shared mission to defeat this terrible virus.
“We will call this failing government out for its serial incompetence that is holding Britain back.”
