Glenn stars as Windies suffer defeat

-

SARAH GLENN made key contributions with bat and ball as England Women overcame the West Indies by 47 runs to move into a 2- 0 lead in the Vitality Twenty20 series at Derby’s Incora Ground.

Glenn, in just her second international knock, top- scored with 26 from 19 balls to usher England to a competitive 151- 8 after they had lurched to 96- 6.

Deandra Dottin and Stafanie Taylor helped the Windies to 72- 1 in response but the established duo both succumbed to Glenn’s leg- breaks, part of a collapse which saw the tourists lose seven wickets for 24 runs.

Fellow spinners Sophie Ecclestone and Mady Villiers also took two wickets as the Windies limped to 104- 8.

■ Eddie Byrom’s unbeaten halfcentury bolstered Somerset’s resolve after a strong start from Essex on a rain- affected opening day of the Bob Willis Trophy final at Lord’s.

Somerset reached 119- 4 as just 44 overs were possible – a loss of time mitigated by the decision to make this first- class season decider a five- day encounter – but owed Byrom heavily for his 51 not out.

The Zimbabwean’s innings prevented an outright collapse from the Taunton side, but reigning county champions Essex made some handy inroads in between the showers.

Sam Cook took 2- 38 across 18 overs, while Jamie Porter and Aaron Beard claimed one apiece.
