Now second stage of city- centre ‘ jigsaw’ is approved
COUNCILLORS HAVE unanimously approved plans for the latest stage of a major plan for Sheffield city centre.
An area between Wellington Street, Carver Street and Cambridge Street is set to be transformed into offices, bars, restaurants and shops as part of a £ 500m Sheffield Council project called Heart of the City II.
The H2 block of this will be an eight or nine- storey development consisting of a basement, a ground floor of six units with flexible use and an office reception.
The upper floors will provide open- plan offices with a top- floor outside terrace.
At a planning and highways committee meeting, the plans were unanimously approved.
Councillor Peter Price, member of the committee, said: “It’s another piece in the jigsaw of the redevelopment of our city centre.
“It’s good news really because it shows there is still confidence in office blocks in the city centre and Zoom hasn’t taken over everything.
“The developers are clearly quite prepared to put their money where their mouth is and continue the development of our city.
“So I welcome this very much and I look forward to it going up.”
Coun Jack Clarkson added: “It is a good news story and it’s an area of the city desperate for redevelopment.
“The only thing that concerns me is the parking. We seem to be losing parking and don’t forget the officers need to realise electric cars are the future and we need to cater for them.”
Sheffield Council sent information packs out looking for responses. The council said it had received “many supportive comments” from people and businesses in the area and addressed issues such as design and access.
