Sheffield and Hull professionals ‘ are among the richest’

-

PROFESSIONALS WORKING in Sheffield and Hull are the second and fourth richest workers in Britain, according to the latest research from independent job board, CV- Library, in partnership with Zoopla.

The data compared the same basic living costs with average salaries in the UK’s key cities.

The study revealed that workers in Sheffield have the second highest disposable income (£ 1,296 per month) in the UK, while workers in Hull have the fourthhighest(£ 1,212per month). Professionals in Leeds fell in the middle of the pack, with £ 1,141 remaining income per month.

Despite being among the richest workers in the UK, professionals in Hull received the lowest monthly salary. However, Hull is the cheapest city to rent in, followed by Aberdeen and Sheffield.

For the UK as a whole, workers in Aberdeen were deemed the richest, followed by Sheffield, Cardiff, Hull and Southampton.

Exeter was in sixth place, followed by Liverpool and Portsmouth, whilst Leeds was in the middle of the pack in ninth place.

Newcastle was in tenth place, followed by Bristol, Birmingham, Glasgow, Leicester, Edinburgh and Manchester. Workers in Brighton and London were deemed the poorest.

Lee Biggins, founder and CEO of CV- Library, said: “Our findings highlight a clear North/ South divide in the UK.

“However, while salaries across the country have fluctuated since last year’s study, wages in Leeds and Sheffield have risen, while living costs have continued to drop.

“While disposable income may still be rising in these cities, the onset of Covid- 19 means that many professionals have faced redundancy or were placed on the Government’s Job Retention Scheme, and received only 80 per cent of their salary.

“This has made it that much harder for Yorkshire workers to make ends meet, particularly in Hull where salaries have already dropped.”

The study found that disposable income has increased the most in Sheffield ( up 40 per cent) and Leeds ( up 21 per cent). Hull salaries fell by 2 per cent.

As a result, Hull has dropped by two places in the table, while Sheffield and Leeds have risen by 10 places and one place respectively since last year’s research.

Tom Parker, consumer spokesperson at Zoopla, said: “The key thing to remember when either renting or indeed purchasing a property is that you are doing so within your means.”
