Town that has namesakes all over the world is to celebrate its 950th birthday

-

IT WAS created almost 1,000 years and has spawned namesakes around the world.

Now plans to celebrate the birth of Richmond, 950 years ago, have received a £ 33,500 boost from the district council.

The Original Richmond Tourism and Business Association ( ORTBA) is hoping to stage a year of events, pandemic restrictions permitting.

Richmond – the first of that name in the world – grew up around its Norman Castle which was established 950 years ago.

The association wants to mark the occasion by not only reaffirming the town’s history but exploring its progress.

Plans include a multi- period market day, with musicians and entertainers, a charity golf day, concerts, and a month- long exhibition.

And there are hopes that a community archaeology project, focusing on the castle and the surrounding area, will develop and expand the understanding of Richmond’s medieval origins.

Other events include a community play in September at the Georgian Theatre Royal where local people will have the opportunity to work alongside professionals. The total cost of the year of events is expected to be around £ 88,000 with the District Council contributing £ 33,500 from its Community Investment Fund.

Chair of ORTBA Marcia McLuckie said: “It is fantastic news that the district council is supporting Celebrate Richmond 950. The generous grant has enabled us to arrange a number of key events and to market the anniversary and Richmond to a wider area.

“The organisers very much want the year to be for and about the local community whilst spreading the word about what a wonderful place Richmond is to visit.”

Council leader Councillor Angie Dale, said: “Richmond – and therefore Richmondshire – grew up around the castle so it’s only right that we celebrate this major milestone.”
