Residents’ plea over plans for huge depot

RESIDENTS IN an East Yorkshire village who object to plans for a massive warehouse near their homes are calling for more time for comments and debate before an “irrevocable” decision is made.

Developer Wykeland Group says the plans for a “global retail logistics facility”, with a footprint of 558,000 sq ft and which is rumoured to be for Amazon, will create 1,500 jobs.

But opponents argue it will mean round- the- clock working and a high volume of lorries and vans accessing the site between North Ferriby and Melton.

Villagers previously spent five years fighting off plans for more than 500 houses on the same site.

Roy Woodcock, former local newspaper and magazine editor, who has lived in the village for 35 years, said: “It will bring noise problems, traffic and safety issues and have a massive environmental impact, including the destruction of hedgerows and trees and the loss of important habitat for wildlife.

“Villagers are already constantly complaining to East Riding Council about ongoing noise problems from other businesses on the Melton West business park which disturbs sleep and makes it impossible to leave windows open at times.

“Now, we’re faced with this literally yards from a significant number of houses, which will inevitably mean more noise, plus massive light pollution during the night.”

Residents question the dead

line for comments of November 27 for such a major development and are asking for that to be extended and a final decision delayed.

Save Ferriby member Lee Collingwood said the group welcomed the jobs but always understood there would be more of a buffer zone between existing woodland and the site, adding: “Surely that can still be achieved.”

Last month planners approved a 123,000 sq ft distribution centre on a neighbouring plot.

Wykeland said it could not comment on who would use the site as there are non- disclosure agreements in place.
