Huge tyre blaze sends plumes of black smoke billowing across city

-

AN investigation is under way today after a massive blaze sent plumes of thick black smoke across Bradford.

More than 100 firefighters from across West Yorkshire tackled a scrap tyre blaze on Upper Castle Street, in the East Bowling area of the city, which broke out early yesterday morning.

Road closures were in place and trains were cancelled on lines between Bradford Interchange, Halifax and Leeds. Some schools also closed.

Bradford Council said people living in the East Bierley, Westgate Hill and Tong areas of the city were being asked to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke.

The Leeds Emergencies Twitter account, run by Leeds Council’s Resilience and Emergencies Team, said residents in some west Leeds areas should keep their doors and windows closed.

They tweeted: “Areas of South Pudsey, Farnley Hall and Bramley are affected by the smoke plume. Local residents should please keep windows and doors closed.”

No one is thought to have been injured in the fire.

A statement released by Northern Rail yesterday said: “Due to a fire next to the railway line at Bradford Interchange all train services running through this station have been cancelled or diverted.

“Due to the size of the fire and the materials involved the fire brigade advise they are unable to extinguish it in the short term and the focus is on containment.

“Services are expected to be cancelled for the duration of the day. This is subject to change as further assessments are carried out.

“Passengers travelling between Bradford and Leeds are advised to go to and from Bradford Forster Square as this route is not affected.”

The fire brigade are unable to extinguish it in the short term.
