Man shot dead ‘ in targeted attack’

-

A MAN shot dead in Sheffield appeared to be the victim of a targeted attack, police have said.

South Yorkshire Police have launched a murder inquiry after a 20- year- old man died in the Burngreave area of the city in the early hours of Monday.

A spokesman said: “Shortly after 1am, police were alerted to a shooting, by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

“A call had been made reporting that a man had been shot inside a property in Grimesthorpe Road South.

“By the time ambulance crews arrived, he had already been transported to hospital.”

The spokesman said the man died from his injuries shortly after arriving at the Northern General Hospital.

He said: “The investigation is in its early stages but at this stage, it is believed to be a targeted attack.”

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Oughton said: “Cordons remain in place in the area today while officers conduct their inquiries, including thorough scene searches and an intensive trawl of CCTV footage.

“Extra officers will be patrolling the area today to provide further reassurance and anyone with concerns should speak to one of our officers.

“As our investigation progresses, I’d encourage anyone with information that could help the inquiry to get in touch with police, or you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously.”

Police say they have been a number of shootings in the Sheffield area in recent months and have taken steps to crack down on the problem.
