Time is right for radical policy rethink

-

From: Paul Rouse, Sutton upon Derwent, York

AS OUR major issues remain unresolved, and we face yet another potential problem of Joe Biden becoming president of the United States, it really is time for a radical policy rethink.

Boris is out of his depth and needs some better advisers. He should bring in people like David Cameron, Iain Duncan- Smith and Jeremy Hunt to join a ‘ war cabinet’.

He should also look again at his scientific advisers, and team them up with a good communicator so the public are not left bamboozled by a series of ever more complicated charts.

But he could start with some very obvious steps to reduce the transmission of Covid 19.

1. Send home university students until after the Christmas holiday. Tuition can easily be delivered online.

2. Ban all contact sports. The transmission rate is there for all to see.

3. Introduce strict penalties for any blatant disregard of isolation regulations, such as raves and street parties, including jail for the ringleaders and heavy fines for those who participate.

Then there is Brexit. He should insist on the final stages of negotiation being between government leaders – Johnson, Merkel, Macron etc. It is too easy for the Heads of Government to hide behind their minions so as to avoid blame. From: Hilary Andrews, Nursery Lane, Leeds.

I was amazed to read ( The Yorkshire Post, November 10) that

Malcolm Naylor thinks that the UK is turning into a Communist state because of the coronavirus pandemic. Doesn’t he realise that many of the instances he sites are due to the fact that many people are unable to follow one piece of advice and use their common sense?

If we all followed the hands, space, face rule there would be no need for any of the measures he so objects to.

READERS of The Yorkshire Post, especially myself, should give our grateful thanks and praise to the Editor for his courage and independence for publishing opinions other than mainstream propaganda.

It is a voice in a wilderness of political chaos and deceit and should be supported and cherished in defence of democracy.

In these dark days it is a glimmer of hope that the public will stand against the social crimes and oppression that are being inflicted upon us in the name of Covid.

Thank you Editor. Maintain a fair and balanced dialogue and platform for all opinions, and long may you reign. It is the only way that the failing trust in our democracy can be restored.
