WHILE MUCH of the country basked in balmy temperatures and bright sunshine over the weekend, the start of meteorological spring today is set to bring cooler temperatures.

While the traditional spring equinox will be on March 20, the charting of the seasons in meteorological terms always begins on March 1. With it comes a colder week for the region, forecasters say, with temperatures to fall today from about 11C to highs of 6C or 7C.

“It always makes us feel positive when it’s a nice sunny weekend,” said Greg Dewhurst, Met Office meteorologist. “It is a good sign of things.

“Overall it looks like the week ahead will be generally colder. There will be some bright spells at times, but it will feel cooler

and colder after the weekend we’ve just had.”

Britons have enjoyed sunshine over recent days as winter drew to a close, with temperatures peaking at 14C in London and the South-East. Even with the sunshine, colder nights have fallen to minus 4C in parts of Yorkshire with some foggy starts.

Now, with the first day of meteorological spring, Yorkshire is set to see temperatures dip.

“High pressure continues to hold on in the beginning of the week, however we will see change underway,” said Mr Dewhurst. “There’s going to be a quite a lot of low cloud, and mist and murk.

“Monday may start grey and gloomy, and although we may it brightening up in places it will feel colder.

“As the week goes on it will stay fairly similar, it’s about average for the time of year. There is a risk of showers mid week, with days tending to stay on the cooler side.”
