40mph wind gusts to bring chill as sunshine and showers forecast

-

SPRING showers mixed with sunshine are on the cards this weekend.

Yorkshire will see what has been termed “typical spring weather” as tomorrow marks Mothering Sunday, with the short-lived dose of sunshine from last weekend likely to be dampened by rainfall and chilly blusters.

Weather experts say windy weather could make temperatures feel cold, with gusts of up to 40mph across the region.

Meteorologist Greg Dewhurst from the Met Office told The Yorkshire Post that the forecast was a mixed bag of sunshine, showers and breeze, and that some remote and high areas were also in with a chance of snow.

He said: “Starting with Saturday, it’s going to be a day of sunshine with showers across the area.

“Some of them may be heavy, and there is also risk of some thunder.”

Hail could also be a factor in the weather over the weekend, Mr Dewhurst added.

“There may also be some snow on the tops in the hills,” he said.

“It’s going to be quite windy with gusts of 35mph to 40mph at times, which could make it feel quite cold.”

Temperatures are set to reach a maximum of around eight degrees over the weekend.

Areas around the coast experienced heavy winds yesterday, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning as gusts reached speeds of up to 70mph in some parts.

The RNLI urged people to exercise caution if visiting the seaside owing to the “severe safety risk” caused by the wind, which is expected to be accompanied by heavy showers.

Heading into next week, the forecast is for mostly dry weather with rain expected on Tuesday.
