Resorts plan ‘windfall’ projects

- From: Fiona Perry, St Andrew’s Drive, Darton, Barnsley.

A DETAILED plan is set to be drawn up to capitalise on a £37.3m windfall which Scarborough Borough Council has secured from the Government.

As part of the Government’s Towns Fund announcement in the Budget on March 3, Scarborough was awarded £20.2m and Whitby secured £17.1m to boost their economic growth.

Scarborough Borough Council’s cabinet yesterday approved the acceptance of the money and kicked-off an eight-week process of working up the business cases for the projects.

Nine schemes for each town, which aim to bring opportunities for skills and enterprise, as well as cultural activities and boosting wellbeing, were proposed as part of the funding bids. Council leader Steve Siddons said the money would be a “catalyst” for further investment in the borough.

The proposed projects for Scarborough include a regeneration project centred on the town’s harbour, a skills training centre for robotics, 3D modelling and sound engineering, and improvements at the cricket ground to help secure the future of first class matches at the venue.

In Whitby, planned projects include a maritime skills academy focused on training in the offshore and renewable energy sectors, an expansion of the Pannett Art Gallery and a revamp of the Old Town Hall and Market Place.

I WRITE in support of Jill Thorp’s excellent article (The Yorkshire Post, March 13) about her concerns regarding the behaviour, and attitude of some of the people visiting the countryside and the imminent relaxation of lockdown rules.

I have been aware most of my adult life of the 1981 Country Code prior to the 2004 Countryside Code possibly because I have taken an interest in rural affairs. However I feel there is a lot of ignorance and lack of interest regarding the Countryside Code.

Although I understand that Defra/Natural England are working to refresh the Code, one of the main problems at this time of year is out-of-control dogs chasing and sometimes causing the death of livestock.

Given the number of dog attacks reported in recent weeks, there are too many people seemingly ignoring the notices farmers put on their gates or the NFU signs on gate posts by public footpaths. I feel that a hard-hitting campaign on TV, radio and social media is needed to bring this issue to the notice of the wider public.
