Classic ‘bank robber car’ steals buyer’s heart
A FORTUITOUS newspaper report has delivered the ultimate birthday gift to a man who spotted the ‘‘bank robber’s classic car’’ of his dreams up for auction.
Jon Denton, who had long been searching for a Mark 2 Jaguar, found one featured in the The Yorkshire Post, fully restored with just 60,460 miles on its clock. Spotting it hours before it was auctioned by Spicers of Goole, the retired farm manager secured a sale for £22,425.
“I had to make a very rash decision and get myself listed,” he said. “I was very lucky to get it, I’m pleased with it as well.
“The vendor has done a marvellous job, it is in fantastic condition.”
The 240 Mark is the very end of the era for Jaguar Mark 2s. Mr Denton, of Brigg in North Lincolnshire, has gifted to himself as an ‘‘indulgent’’ 70th birthday present.
“It was the last of what they called ‘the bank robber’s car’, all the villains used to have them as they went so fast,” he said. “The police had them as well in fact, to catch the villains. They were much sought after. There’s never been one so local before. That’s what galvanised me, to put a bid in. I’m pleased to say it’s paid off.”
Auctioneer Andy Spicer, who had described the 1968 Jaguar as the best restoration he had ever seen, said it had been of huge personal significance to its previous owner. “To help someone pass on something they have cherished so much, and then to find the ultimate person to buy it who will cherish it and value it just as much, is very satisfying indeed,” he said.
