Chance for residents to learn more about long-awaited flood defence scheme

-

A MEETING to allow people to ask questions about a £4.9m flood defence scheme in York is to be held in April.

The plans for the new scheme would protect 43 homes in the Fordlands Road area of Fulford in York and would also reduce flooding on the A19. A virtual meeting will take place on Thursday, April 15, at 5.30pm, when residents will be able to hear about the planned works and ask the city’s flood manager questions.

Under the scheme, the flood wall will be extended, a new valve flap will be installed at the Germany Beck culvert and a new pumping station built. The council has earmarked £2m towards the project. Construction work could start early next year.

During incidents of flooding residents rely on a 4x4 vehicle to access school, work and their homes.

Fulford councillor Keith Aspden said: “The floods earlier this year have once again highlighted the need for an improved and joined-up flood plan, one that protects the A19 and Germany Beck as well as the Fordlands Road and Fordlands Crescent communities.

“After years of petitions and campaigning with local residents, I am delighted that a £4.9m funding package has been drawn together. This is a very significant step forward for our local community.

“The online meeting will give residents a chance to once again express their views and ask any questions they might have on how the local scheme will now progress.

“After the meeting, it’s essential that residents are consulted widely on a final proposal and I would encourage residents who are interested to join our Zoom Q&A to learn more.”
