Hacks of 3 to 15 miles will raise money for charity
HORSE RIDERS are being encouraged to take part in the Yorkshire Hack this Easter Weekend to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Organised by chairman of the charity’s York Fundraising Committee, Katrina Lane, the idea is for riders to organise their own hack of either three, eight or 15 miles and raise money for the charity.
Ms Lane said it was vital to start raising funds again after the shutdown saw the charity’s Yorkshire income fall drastically.
“Macmillan lost £1m in fundraising income in Yorkshire last year and we urgently need to make up some of the lost ground,” she said.
“A friend approached me with the idea of the Yorkshire Hack and I immediately jumped on board.
“It felt like a good idea to suggest the Easter long weekend, a socially distanced activity while raising vital funds.”
Ms Lane said the idea of people riding out together now lockdown restrictions are easing “struck a chord” with the members of York Fundraising Committee.
“We wanted to create a sense of camaraderie after all spending so much time apart because of the pandemic, we can be together in spirit.”
Every rider who raises a minimum of £25 will receive a special 2021 Macmillan Yorkshire Hack rosette and, Ms Lane said, the rider in each category who raises the most sponsorship by midnight on April 31 will win a special prize,
“It’s a bit of fun but for an important cause,” she said.
“Every penny we raise will go towards Macmillan’s Yorkshire Appeal and support people in the region.”
Ms Lane said it is also hoped this may become an annual event.
“I would love to see a sea of green riders for such a good cause.”
