Star cricketer in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus
INDIA CRICKET superstar Sachin Tendulkar has been admitted to hospital as he continues to battle coronavirus.
The 47-year-old revealed last weekend that he had tested positive for Covid-19 and was quarantining at home with only mild symptoms.
However, in a post on his official Twitter account yesterday, he confirmed that he had been admitted as a precaution but hoped to be discharged “in a few days”.
Tendulkar’s tweet said: “Thank you for your wishes and prayers. As a matter of abundant precaution under medical advice, I have been hospitalised.
“I hope to be back home in a few days. Take care and stay safe everyone.”
He concluded by sending his wishes to his fellow members of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning squad on the 10th anniversary of the victory over Sri Lanka.
Dubbed “the Little Master” by his legions of fans, Tendulkar scored a record 15,921 Test runs for India during a 24-year international career and is widely regarded as the game’s most complete batsman.
In 1992 at the age of just 19, Tendulkar was signed as Yorkshire County Cricket Club’s first ever overseas player, an injury replacement for Australian fast bowler Craig McDermott, who suffered a groin injury on the eve of the season.
Tendulkar scored 1,671 runs that season in 35 matches across all forms of the game, including two centuries.
He passed 1,000 runs in the Championship with a top score of 100 against Durham at the Racecourse ground.
He lives in Mumbai, the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra which has been the hardest hit by a resurgence in COVID-19 cases.
India is experiencing a second wave of coronavirus, which experts believe is being fuelled by people being less cautious as well as mixed messaging by the Indian government.
After being cooped up in their homes for nearly a year, many Indians have begun congregating at crowded weddings and family functions without taking precautions to halt the spread of the virus.
