EASTER ON HIGH

-

A pair of hikers view the Rylstone Cross near Skipton in Yorkshire, on Easter Monday. Temperatures are expected to be up to 11C lower than during the sunshine of the Easter weekend as cold northern winds move over the country this week.

THE COLDER temperatures which hit the region yesterday are set to stay today and return on Friday, with Wednesday and Thursday expected to be milder, the Met Office has confirmed.

Snow showers are forecast in some parts of Yorkshire today.

Easter Monday temperatures were up to 11C lower than during the sunshine of the first part of the Easter weekend, as a cold northerly wind moved over the country.

The wind played a key factor in yesterday’s weather, as while southern England saw highs of up to 7C, gusts up to 30mph made the temperature feel closer to freezing in the north.

Sub-zero temperatures hit many parts of northern England yesterday, while the mercury was expected to drop to minus 7C in some areas of Scotland.

While snow showers will largely be seen in the north, they could occur nearly anywhere in the UK early this week, the Met Office said, with light snow seen as far south as parts of London yesterday.

Met Office yellow warnings for snow are in place until 10am today for Scotland, with winds of up to 70mph forecast.

Today will be another cold day for people across Yorkshire. There will be some sunny spells but a greater chance of snow showers, leading to temporary accumulations over high grounds. The winds will remain strong and there will be widespread frost overnight. The maximum temperature will be 5C.

A Met Office spokesman said: “The outlook for Wednesday through to Friday is less cold and windy. Wednesday will be cloudier, with some rain overnight.

“It will be somewhat milder on Thursday, with rain at times. It will be colder again on Friday, with further wintry showers expected.”
