Footpaths on bridge may reopen after deaths
THE Humber Bridge should reopen to cyclists and pedestrians on leisure trips again “within weeks” after extra security is put in place following a spate of deaths.
The footpaths across the bridge, which forms a vital link between East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, were closed on April 3 after six deaths were recorded in just 31 days.
A spokesman said between 50 and 70 cyclists were using the bridge, but it is still not open for leisure users.
“These people have confirmed to us they need to go to work or they have other commitments and we are working to try and ensure they can do so,” he added.
Cyclists and pedestrians who need to cross the bridge can email their information to Humber Bridge staff who will then pass it on to security guards.
The spokesman said bridge managers were looking to reopen footpaths at the earliest opportunity, with additional CCTV and fully trained volunteers present.
Thirty volunteers have signed up so far and anyone offering to help will be passed on to organisations like the Samaritans for training.
On Friday bridge board members heard at a meeting that a staff member was being supported after witnessing multiple “tragic incidents”.
Board member and North Lincolnshire councillor Richard Hannigan asked what mental health support was in place for staff in light of recent incidents.
Chief operating officer Andrew Arundel said: “We have an all-encompassing system for staff well-being. We had one member of staff who witnessed a couple of tragic incidents and they’re being supported.”
Cyclist and pedestrian commuters and those interested in volunteering can email Humber Bridge officials on mail@humberbridge.co.uk.
