Spring is in the air as outdoors festival begins

- Richard Fidler FEATURES WRITER

THERE’S definitely a feel that spring is on the doorstep when Sheffield hosts Festival of the Outdoors during the month of march. This year is no different with a whole host of events helping you experience the great outdoors. We take a look at the week ahead.

THE FESTIVAL OF THE OUTDOORS

Every March, as the days get longer, drier, and warmer, Sheffield hosts the Festival of the Outdoors.

Known as The Outdoor City, Sheffield is proud of its green spaces and proximity to the Peak District, which makes it ideal to bring together a wide variety of events.

Starting from March 1 you will find everything from large-scale international sporting events to small community gatherings; from guided walks to some of the world’s hardest bouldering problems; from outdoor markets to film festivals.

MTB SYMPOSIUM

One of the first events to kick-off the Festival of the Outdoors is the second Reframing Mountain Biking Symposium, which takes place March 1-2. The event aims to collectively address how to progress mountain biking in the UK past some of the challenges that currently exist and make the sport a better, safer, more sustainable and fun space for all.

It follows a successful event in 2022 and brings together community leaders to the wider industry, mountain bike trail associations, organisations, bike brands, media, NGOs, landowners and managers, guides, researchers and ambassadors.

VIDEO GAMES

All week at the Doncaster Dome is the first major international touring exhibition to explore the vibrant history and culture of video games.

Focusing on key game developments between 1962 and the present day, Game On takes a global perspective at gaming’s fascinating past and limitless future. From the colossal Mainframes of the early sixties to the latest releases, Game On examines the creative and scientific advances that have revolutionised the games we play.

The exhibition features more than 150 playable arcade, console, and handheld games and includes iconic games such as Space Invaders, Sonic the Hedgehog and RockBand . Sessions are one hour 45 minutes long and to book, visit the Dome’s website.

DAY OF REFLECTION

On Sunday, March 3 a Day of Reflection for pandemic victims will take place. It is the fourth day of reflection but the first to take place on the date recommended by the UK Commission on Covid Commemoration in its final report which said the day should be held annually on the first Sunday of March. It is being organised by charity Marie Curie with Government backing.

Events are taking place across the country with Walls of Reflection open to the public at Marie Curie shops in Darley Street, Bradford, and Market Square in Shipley.
