Schools in region get £33m of funding
THE Government has announced £33.3m in funding for improvements to school and sixth-form buildings across Yorkshire and the Humber.
The funding from the Department for Education will be shared between 71 schools in the financial year 2024-25, as part of a wider £1.8bn commitment to schools.
Money from the Conditional Improvement Fund was awarded to eligible academies, sixthform colleges and voluntary-aided schools who made successful bids for capital funding.
This includes projects that address building issues such as upgrading heating systems and repairing roofs, as well as expansion projects.
Crossley Heath School in Halifax has received funding to fix faulty roofing.
A spokesperson for the school said fixing the roof “was vital to effective running of the curriculum as the leaks we were experiencing meant that classrooms were often having to be shut during inclement weather and in turn was having a detrimental impact on the furnishings within the spaces affected.
“As a result we have not had to shut rooms off, been able to improve the internal aesthetic in what were permanently damp areas and provide facilities and working conditions that one would expect from a high-performing secondary school of our nature and reputation,” they added.
Schools run by councils, multi academy trusts and large voluntary aided school groups will receive similar funding for building projects through the School Condition Allocations funding, which has seen over £20m in funding granted to successful bidders in the region.
Money to remove reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete from school buildings is being funded separately by the Department for Education.
