Duchess joins Field to Food day for children
THE Duchess of Edinburgh has visited an event helping schoolchildren learn about food production.
Sophie was at the Royal Bath and West Showground in Shepton Mallet for the Field to Farm Learning Day, where she was shown around the event and spoke to children.
The Royal Bath and West Society said the Duchess was shown around the “invaluable learning experience”.
The children watched talks and demonstrations, as well as being given the opportunity to “get their hands dirty”.
A spokesman for the organisers said: “The Field to Food Learning Day has become an integral part of the Royal Bath and West Society’s work in informing and educating young consumers about where their food comes from and the hard work farmers do to make sure we eat the very best of British food.
“For the children to be able look, hear, smell and get their hands dirty must be the most effective way to learn. For our volunteer supporters that make the day happen it is also a great learning experience for them as they get to hear what the next generation of consumer thinks of farming and food.”
The event is not open to the public and is limited to the 1,500 children who apply to attend.
In 2023 the Royal Bath and West Society launched a new Education Hub; an online hub providing resources to teachers, parents and home educators that can be used to learn all about British farming and the process of field to fork.
As well as providing engaging ways to learn about farming and food production, the resources available have also been created in line with the National Curriculum, with links to “living things and their habitats”.
Sophie also visited the Yeo Valley Organic Garden at Holt Farm in Blagdon.
The centre near Bristol offers visitors tours of the farm and days in its organic garden.
