EMO TIONAL TIES with fashion designer Margherita Maccapani Missoni Amos
Here I am, falling asleep on grandfather Ottavio [Missoni]’s shoulders when I was very young. I spent a lot of time with him and my grandmother Rosita. He taught me that having a good life should come before work. Merù Gioielli in Milan is my go-to place for special handmade jewellery. Its tiny enamel charms have been a part of my life since I received an angel when I was born. I take a little purse with me when I’m travelling, in case of a last-minute dinner or event. That way, I don’t need to carry a huge handbag. I love the embroidery of this one by Saloni. This is me at 16 with one of my best friends, Miuccia. She’s my right-hand woman for the Margherita Kids collection. We live near one another in the countryside outside Milan. She knows everything about me – I trust her implicitly. My paternal grandmother, Nonna Elena, used to handknit sweaters such as this one for me, my brother Francesco and sister Teresa, using leftover balls of wool from the Missoni factory. Nonna encouraged my dream of being a little princess, buying me Bonpoint dresses and suggesting I debut at the 2002 Crillon Debutantes Ball in Paris at 19. Margherita means daisy in Italian, so I’ve been collecting all things daisy since I was young, including these vintage earrings. It’s a very simple and democratic flower – I feel lucky to be attached to such a symbol of happiness. I’ve worn reading glasses since I was 13, so I like to have fun wearing different pairs for different looks. They have become one of my key accessories. I’ve always loved troll dolls – their fantastical colours and fluffy heads simply make no sense. My dad [artistic director Marco Maccapani] gave me this crystal embellished one as a brooch. It reminds me not to be too serious. This headpiece was a recent gift from one of my favourite milliners, Piers Atkinson. I’ve loved and worn headpieces since I was little. They give the feeling of a special occasion, but I wear them every day.
