Singer Jack Savoretti on face paint, football stars and his favourite fast food
Guilty pleasure? Dancing to the Gipsy Kings into the early hours of the morning. Where is home? Oxfordshire, Italy, Switzerland and California. I was born in London, but I have moved around a lot. Earliest memory? Being driven to Portofino, Italy, by my parents with Italian singer Lucio Battisti playing in the background. As a child you wanted to be… A football player. Career plan B? I never have a plan B. Who would play you in a movie of your life? Gael García Bernal. I was once mistaken for him and asked to sign an autograph, which I did. Biggest bugbear? Air fresheners, especially in cars. Secret to a happy relationship? Loyalty. Your best quality? I laugh a lot. And your worst? I can be critical. Last meal on earth? A cheeseburger ‘animal-style’ from In-N-Out, the US fast-food chain. It’s a mustard-cooked beef burger with lettuce, tomato, cheese, pickled cucumber, extra mayonnaise and grilled onions. Advice to your teenage self? Be careful who you surround yourself with. Secret skill? I love cooking Italian food. My dad is Italian, although my dishes also have my mum’s German-Polish influence. What do you see when you look in the mirror? My father. On a day off we’d find you… With my children [Connie, five, and Winter, one], covered in face paint. Starstruck moment? Meeting Wayne Rooney at Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire. He was surprisingly endearing and humble. Cat or dog? Dog. We have a cockapoo called Maggie. Big break? I’ve never had one. Once you do, it’s easy to fade away. But performing on The Graham Norton Show earlier this year was great – it introduced the band to a lot of people. Most embarrassing moment? Taking a shower with Italian football player Alessandro Del Piero. We had just played a charity match in Italy. What did you have for breakfast? Cheerios with my children. Dream dinner-party guests? Sophia Loren [my celebrity crush], the late Ayrton Senna and Barack Obama. Favourite tipple? Hendrick’s gin and tonic. Hangover cure? A bloody mary. Most romantic thing you’ve ever done? Proposing to my wife [actress Jemma Powell] by the Serpentine in Hyde Park. It was terrifying. Top of your bucket list? Learning how to fly a plane. Philosophy? It doesn’t matter what you do, it’s how you do it. Last film that made you cry? Up –I was in tears within ten minutes. I cry at everything, even TV commercials. Where would you time travel to? Italy in the 1950s or California in the 1960s. First record you bought? Talking Timbuktu by Ali Farka Touré and Ry Cooder. Most extravagant purchase? Our house in Oxfordshire. Biggest fear? Letting people down. Happiness is… Not having expectations.
