What about your appearance is important to you? I have a friend who travels regularly to Los Angeles and goes straight from the airport to a nail bar, because she’s convinced that a perfect manicure gives her the confidence to perform well in a business meeting. Another friend gives herself an extra shot of glamour by getting a spray tan for special occasions. And it’s not just women. I know plenty of men who are just as obsessed as we are with the powers of a good skin serum, as well as one who feels naked without the lip balm he carries everywhere to smear on at will. For me, it’s all about my hair. It’s always been so fine and hard to manage. I don’t so much wake up with what’s politely referred to as ‘morning hair’ every day, but seriously ‘troll doll’ sticky-up hair. In 2008 I finally found the hairdresse­r (hi George Northwood) who gave me my perfect cut. I won’t let him change it because it’s the easiest wash-and-go style I’ve ever known. It looks right even when it’s pretty messy and takes me seconds to fluff into place. It is no exaggerati­on to say that it has shaped not only my confidence, but my identity.

The right beauty advice at the right time can be transforma­tional. For this reason, I wanted to revamp YOU’s beauty pages and today we’re introducin­g a whole new look and feel, and a new beauty director.

Edwina Ings-Chambers has a long career of knowing her stuff, inside and out, and I’m excited that from today she is bringing her expertise to the magazine. One of my favourite things is a sneak peek at what’s in her bathroom cabinet and make-up bag on page 10. Experts like Edwina are inundated with products and always trying enough potions and lotions to fill Wembley Stadium, so what someone with that access keeps actually buying is always fascinatin­g to me. And having now seen her glowing skin up close every day for over a month, I know her advice is worth listening to.
