How to...

Trace the around the rim of a large round dinner plate with a pencil to create a circle on the surface of a piece of MDF, then use a ruler to draw a horizontal line through the centre of your circle.

Draw an X over the halved circle, splitting it up into six equal sections. Turn each of the six sections into triangles by using a ruler to draw a straight line under the curved part of each section, connecting it to the other two straight lines to form a triangle. Repeat this process six times to form a hexagon.

Use a jigsaw to cut out the hexagon, then sand the edges smooth. Wipe away any dust from the surface of the hexagon.

Lay a sheet of marble-effect self-adhesive vinyl, paper side up, on your worksurface and place the hexagon on top. Draw around the hexagon with a pencil, then draw another line all the way around, 5cm further out than the first pencil line. Cut around this outer line with a craft knife.

Remove the paper backing and carefully smooth the vinyl over the front surface of the hexagon. Use an old credit card to smooth out any air bubbles as you apply the vinyl. Make small slits in the vinyl at each corner to help ease it neatly around the edges, then smooth the ends in place on the reverse side of the hexagon to create your marbleeffect tabletop.

With the tabletop right side down, place the hairpin legs in your desired position and use a pencil to mark where the pilot holes for the screws need to be. Carefully drill pilot holes for your screws on the underside of the tabletop using the pencil marks as a guide.

Place each leg into position, line the holes in the leg plate up with the holes in the tabletop, and drive your screws in. ‘I like a look to flow. This table complements the bathroom floor perfectly’
