2 Temperament
For your schooling to progress your horse has to accept your leg aids. Martini’s temperament is a little sharp and, like many horses, can overreact when a leg aid is used. Using lateral work is a great way to encourage your horse to accept your leg calmly, Alison suggests the following exercise.
Exercise 2: Shoulder-in to travers
This one is a more complicated than the first exercise. To help you master it, we’ve split it into three stages: 1. Shoulder-in 2. 10m circle 3. Travers. Practice riding each stage individually, and once you can ride all three confidently, try linking them together as one exercise.
Stage 1: How to ride it
1. Start by riding a 10m circle in the corner.
2. Ride shoulder-in from the quarter marker to the half way marker (E or B).
3. At E or B, ride your horse straight.
