Advice from Petplan Equine

Buying a new horse is exciting, but do you have the right cover? The team at Petplan Equine explains how to find the perfect insurance for you and your new partner

IF YOU’VE CHOSEN your new horse, he’s been vetted and you’ve agreed to buy, it’s vital to get the right insurance in place as soon as he’s yours. When considering insurance, it’s very important to do your research and talk to a specialist provider to ensure you get the right cover to suit your needs. First and foremost, make sure you insure your horse as soon as you’ve paid for him. The journey to you and the first few days in a new home are a pretty critical time. If you don’t insure and something happens (even if it’s something minor), your lovely new horse won’t be covered. Most horse insurance policies provide mandatory basic cover for ‘death, theft and straying’. In the event of one of these situations arising, the policy will pay out the market value of the horse, but most of us will also require cover for vet’s fees. You can then add on cover such as saddlery and tack, or personal accident, dependent on what other insurance you have in place. At Petplan Equine we understand that a ‘one size fits all’ approach doesn’t work so we offer a range of levels of cover so you only pay for the cover you actually need. We’ll also tailor your policy to suit the activities you decide to do with your new horse as your partnership develops. If you have any questions or need to clarify anything about insuring your horse, always ask your insurer – it’s much better to be sure about all aspects of your policy from the beginning. Then all you have to do is enjoy getting to know your new best friend and planning lots of fun together. For more information and to get a quote, head to www.petplanequine.co.uk
