HAVE YOU EVER considered how much you control your horse’s life and the impact this could have on his behaviour and temperament? Take a momentm to consider how many aspects of your horse’s life you decide and you’ll quickly realise you’re in charge of pretty much everything – where he goes, what he eats and drinks, who he socialises with, even how he moves and how long these things happen for. You might believe your horse can choose what to do – how many times have you heard someone say: ‘he wouldn’t do it if he didn’t want to’? However, many horses often do what they’re asked because if they don’t, the alternative is worse. Over time, your horse may have learned (not necessarily from you, but maybe from a previous owner) that it’s easier to tow the line rather than make his own decision.

Why choice is important

This lack of choice can have a huge effect on your horse’s outlook, behaviour and even his health. Some, who are severely restricted or afraid to make decisions, can become withdrawn, depressed, or develop stereotypies to try and adapt to their restrictions. They can even become difficult to handle and ride. Lettingtting your horse have choices gives him the freedom to be himself. It also builds confidence, nfidence, teaches him to become bolder and can improve your relationship as he’ll trust you to listen to him. There are things you can do on a daily basis to give your horse the opportunity to make his own decisions. Why not give some a go and see how he responds? Turn the page to discover simple things you can do to enable your horse to have more choice.
