When Ginny Shirt decided to buy little Dolly from a dealer, she had no idea how much fun they’d have with a new hobby
AVING RIDDEN HORSES all her life, Ginny Shirt decided she wanted to try something new but not necessarily in the saddle. “I got it into my head that I’d like to take up driving,” says Ginny. “I had a couple of lessons and absolutely loved them but I knew that training a pony to drive from scratch would be beyond my capabilities. “Christmas was approaching and I knew that I needed to find a well-behaved driving pony who was experienced enough to help me get me out on the roads,” says Ginny. “My husband kindly offered to buy one for me, so we found an avid driver with a few horses for sale. After trying one that defintely wasn’t suitable, we came across a completely delightful little 14hh pony. We went out for a spin and I fell in love.” “Dolly obeyed every command she was given. In fact, I was so smitten in those first few moments that I brought her, her tack and the little gig, too! “Part of what I love most about Dolly is her kind and attentive nature. She listens to everything I ask her to do and I try to take her out whenever the weather permits. Fortunately, I’m surrounded by some really lovely, circular rides, which are great for getting Dolly fifit. “Much to our surprise, Dolly produced the most beautiful foal not too long after we had her. We called him Bobbert Bear. “Now, six months later, I’m on a mission to get Dolly fit again and she is going well. She’s been the most wonderful gift imaginable. When I’m out on the country lanes with Dolly, the drive gives me such a thrill. She just trots along listening to my commands and we both enjoy ourselves immensely.”
