Ask the experts

“Unless someone is really experienced, I suggest seeking advice to choose a bit,” says Lindsay. “There are experts who have spent years bitting horses and this experience can’t be matched. Asking your trainer is also a good option. They’ll know your horse and should be able to offer advice. “Many retailers now offer bitting advice and will help you make the right choice based on the information you give them. There are also retailers who specialise in bits and bitting. One of the best options is to attend a bitting clinic because you and your horse can be assessed together.” Buying bits that aren’t right can be an expensive affair. Lindsay advises looking for retailers offering a trial facility. She says: “Sprenger offer bit hire – you try one for a few weeks and if it isn’t right, it’s returned for a small fee. You’ll be asked a few questions about how it went so they can decide what to try next.”
