FEBRUARY MAY BE the shortest month of the year, but it’s a tricky one for us riders. We look forward to spring sunshine and lighter evenings — but there are six more weeks until the clocks change and the days still seem short. But don’t despair! Hacking can be lots of fun in all weathers, and your horse will thank you for it. Whether you’re hacking out to enjoy some downtime after a long week at work, an hour or two’s peace from the children or just making the most of spending precious time with your favourite equine, you can make February work for you. It doesn’t matter where you are in your journey. Whether you’re on your way to hacking 1,000 miles or just starting out on your quest, there’s no better time to get out, explore and cement the fantastic bond you’ve built with your horse during the winter. It’s good for your health too — and theirs (see box over the page).

A mighty fine goal

Our message this month is simple: yes, you can hack 1,000 miles. No matter if you’ve got a sporty youngster, a hairy cob or something in between, how long it takes you to reach that distance is irrelevant. The important thing is that you’ve got a mighty fine goal to work towards. There are only 28 days in February and then the lighter evenings will be here before you know it. So tack up, jump on and hack away — not forgetting to keep us here at Your Horse Magazine, as well as your fellow hack 1000-milers, posted on your progress. Got somewhere incredible to ride? Spotted something unusual on your route or got a funny story to tell? Let us know by joining our Facebook group — Hack 1000 miles — or visit www.hack1000miles.co.uk.
