Horseware’s latest range to help keep pesky flies at bay

With an increasing number of flies expected this season in the UK, it’s becoming even more important to protect your horse from these pests. We take a look at the range of rugs from Horseware to help keep the flies away

HORSEFLIES FEED on blood and can inflict a nasty bite. Your horse may become agitated trying to kick a fly on his legs or belly or swat it with his tail. In summer, it’s wise to invest in a fly rug to protect your horse in the field or stable. These are lightweight and reflective, to keep the sun off and keep your horse cool, but essentially work by covering his body.

Colour technology

Horseware continually strives to use the latest research and technology to make life easier for horse and rider and this season’s launch of the Amigo Vamoose Evolution fly rug (as shown in the main image) takes this to the next level. In addition to the revolutionary, patented Vamoose control technology, where a safe but effective fly repellent is bound in the rug fabric, Horseware has also used extensive new research into the use of colour as a natural deterrent for insects. Most of us are aware that insects are drawn to certain odours and are repelled by others. Recent studies have discovered that they feel the same way about certain colours and, in turn, their behaviour can be influenced by colour. Insects are naturally attracted to bright colours such as yellow and white, as well as dark colours resembling hide or rumps. However, colours like light green or aqua mixed with orange don’t register when seen in the UV spectrum, deterring insects away from any objects in these shades. As these colours lack visibility on the UV spectrum, they discourage insects from landing there. Horseware is very excited about its new Amigo Vamoose Evolution rug which uses this latest colour research in the pattern and colourway. Paired with its revolutionary Vamoose insect control technology, this rug offers the ultimate innovative response to fly prevention this season. The Amigo Vamoose Evolution also includes the new disc closure system to create a super-lightweight, high-tech product.

Sweet itch

Some horses suffer badly with sweet itch, an allergic response to Culicoides midge bites. This results in skin lesions that are aggravated by the horse rubbing them. Horseware has the ultimate sweet itch protection with the Rambo Hoody Vamoose in super-soft material that keeps your horse comfortable and fully protected from midges. Horseware also recommends you keep a bottle of Hypocare handy should your horse receive any bites.

Rain, rain go away

For those pesky seasonal showers – and, let’s face it, we get a fair few! – the multitasking Amigo Three-in-one Vamoose, with added UV protection, shields your horse from flies, while the rug’s waterproof top layer helps to keep him dry when it rains.
