How can I ensure a safe journey?

QWhat trailer checks should I make before I set off? Hayley Clarke, Berkshire

AThere are a number of checks to make before you set off anywhere with your trailer, including making sure you have the correct driving licence to legally be able to tow one. Check the load and weight limits on both the trailer and towing vehicle, and ensure the wheel nuts are secure. You should also:

Check the tyre pressures on both car and trailer before each journey.

The correct towing pressure for your car’s tyres will be in your vehicle handbook. At the same time, look for any signs of wear or damage.

Ensure tyres meet the legal minimum tread of at least 1.6mm

— see The Highway Code for details. Remember, trailer tyres can wear out long before the tread wears down, so look for cracks, bulges or cuts in the tyre walls, which may result in a blow-out.

It’s vital to check the breakaway cable is correctly attached.

The cable mustn’t be so tight that it can accidentally apply the brake or so loose that it drags on the ground. Do this after you’ve hitched up and the jockey wheel is up and secure. Check indicators and lights are clean and in good working order.

Lastly, walk round the vehicle to make sure doors and fastenings are secure,

and that you’ve got a clear view along the sides and rear corners of the trailer when driving. For more advice go to gov.uk/guidance/ tow-a-trailer-with-a-car-safety-checks.
