Riding holidays

-

QI’ve not ridden for quite a few years. Are there holidays tailored to riders who have limited experience? Chrissy Plum, Brentwood

AThere are many rides geared towards people who have some riding experience (at Ride World Wide we don’t arrange rides for complete beginners), but most are suitable for those of an intermediate level and above — although this, and the riding fitness required, does vary from ride to ride. Many rides have a good selection of well-mannered but forward-going horses to suit riders of different abilities, as well as enjoyable, responsive horses for the experienced rider. Some can provide steady, reliable mounts for those who may have limited experience, but are confident and fit.

Out-riding big game

On many African safaris you’ll be riding in open spaces where there may be big (and potentially dangerous) game. So, although you don’t need to be an expert jumper, you should be comfortable, confident and in control on a horse at all paces (walk to fast canter) and used to riding in open country, over varied terrain, with other horses. If you haven’t ridden much recently or are worried about your stamina and fitness, I’d suggest you start with a ride where you’ll return to the same base each night, rather than one where you ride from A to B over a period of a whole week, for example. The former gives you a lot more flexibility in riding hours and if you decide you don’t want to ride one particular day, you won’t have to.
