WHEN WE BEGAN developing BEDMAX shavings 20 years ago, our aim was to produce a completely natural, hygienic, dust-free bedding that would help to combat all the health risks that threaten stabled horses. Over the past 20 years, we’ve invested a lot of time and effort into following and commissioning equine veterinary research, with a special focus on the health issues that threaten horses while they’re stabled. We’ve also carried out surveys with horse owners to discover which are the most serious and widespread problems — and how bedding can help to prevent them. The research and our surveys confirm what we were told by equestrian professionals and leading equine veterinary experts back in 1999 — that by far the biggest health threat to horses in the UK is respiratory disease, and the most common cause of respiratory disease is airborne dust in the stable caused by poor-quality bedding.

Stable issues

There are other significant health problems horses face when they spend long periods of time i n their stables, including hoof disease, the threat of ammonia, bacterial infection and many others. Unfortunately, the majority of horses in the UK today tend to spend a large part of every day in the unnatural confines of a relatively small space. In our latest surveys, 80% of owners told us that in winter their horses spend 12 hours or more out of every 24 in their stable. We’ve tried hard to help spread the message about preventative equine healthcare, particularly about the ‘submerged iceberg’ danger of respiratory disease, as one leading equine vet has called it. The great majority of horse owners are passionately committed to doing their very best for the health and wellbeing of their horses, and thousands have come to trust BEDMAX and LITTLEMAX shavings as the healthiest horse bedding.
