Buying tips: heated kit

-

1 Waterproof connectors are essential on clothing you’ll be wearing outdoors.

2 Look for washable garments for easy care.

3 Carbon fibre panels for the heating elements in clothing are robust and waterproof. Wire can break or shortcircuit, although it’s still widely used.

Ask for advice if you’re unsure.

4 Clothing needs to fit well to stop cold air getting in. Choose a snug fit, but not so tight that it causes the heated panels to press against the skin, which can irritate. Gender-specific kit, if available, can provide the best fit.

5 A small battery should have sufficient capacity to power the garment without making it heavy or bulky. High-quality lithium power packs are ideal. Capacity is measured in amps per hour (Ah) and the bigger the number, the longer the battery will last before needing to be recharged.

6 Check the power consumption. Well-designed, efficient heated garments draw minimal power so batteries last longer. Power consumption is measured in watts — the lower the number, the less power it uses and the longer the battery will last.

7 Some of the heated motorcycle kit is versatile enough to be worn at the yard, so take a look at that too.

8 Remember you’ll have a layer of clothing between you and your heated garment, so choose a size to accommodate that.

9 Look for a guarantee for the garment overall and also for the heated elements. Heated kit is an investment and you need to know that you’re covered if something goes wrong.
