Buying tips: heated kit
Waterproof connectors are essential on clothing you’ll be wearing outdoors.
Look for washable garments for easy care.
Carbon fibre panels for the heating elements in clothing are robust and waterproof. Wire can break or shortcircuit, although it’s still widely used.
Ask for advice if you’re unsure.
Clothing needs to fit well to stop cold air getting in. Choose a snug fit, but not so tight that it causes the heated panels to press against the skin, which can irritate. Gender-specific kit, if available, can provide the best fit.
A small battery should have sufficient capacity to power the garment without making it heavy or bulky. High-quality lithium power packs are ideal. Capacity is measured in amps per hour (Ah) and the bigger the number, the longer the battery will last before needing to be recharged.
Check the power consumption. Well-designed, efficient heated garments draw minimal power so batteries last longer. Power consumption is measured in watts — the lower the number, the less power it uses and the longer the battery will last.
Some of the heated motorcycle kit is versatile enough to be worn at the yard, so take a look at that too.
Remember you’ll have a layer of clothing between you and your heated garment, so choose a size to accommodate that.
Look for a guarantee for the garment overall and also for the heated elements. Heated kit is an investment and you need to know that you’re covered if something goes wrong.
