Equine therapy
As horse owners we’re well aware of the impact that spending time with our horses has on our mood. So being unable to see our horses for a while, or making the tough decision not to ride, impacts on us hugely. A spokesperson for Equine Pathways UK, an equine therapy organisation based in Leeds, says: “Horses are very sensitive and emotionally connected animals. They have the ability to sense our emotions and respond in a comforting and supportive way. Time spent with horses creates a unique bond, building a relationship of confidence, self-esteem and comfort.” In fact, countless studies have proved that riding, or simply spending time grooming and bonding with a horse, has a multitude of benefits with regards to mental health. Spending time with your horse each day is a great way to help calm your mind. You could even practise your visualisation techniques while at the yard, breathing in the smell of your horse’s hay, stroking his neck, watching him graze. The yard is such a positive place for so many of us, associated with good memories and time well spent with our horses. If you’re unable to see your horse at the moment, look back over old photos at competitions or out hacking, and focus on visualising what your goals with your horse will be once you’re back in the saddle. Through these uncertain times it can feel as though we’ve lost control, but positivity will keep us all moving forwards. You have the power to come out the other side stronger than you’ve ever been.
