48 HOURS IN… Hull
The UK’s new City of Culture may feel a little off the beaten track, but it’s a gem of a city worth exploring with plenty to see
DAY ONE What to do
If you missed the ceramic poppies at the Tower of London, you can see them at the Maritime Museum (pictured top right) until May 7. While you’re there, take a look at the whale skeleton, too. As Hull is the City of Culture 2017, you’ll be spoilt for choice for things to do. One fun installation that’s in the city until the end of the year is The City Speaks, by Michael Pinsky, on Humber Dock Street. Record your thoughts into the microphone and see them become a scrolling text on the tidal surge barrier. Maritime Museum is free. Call 01482 300300 or visit www.hullcc.gov.uk Where to eat If you’re the sort of person who always wants a taste of everyone else’s food, you can’t go wrong with tapas! Try a bite of all the Spanish classics, from patatas bravas to paella, as you look out over the busy marina at 1884 Wine and Tapas Bar. Prices £6-£15 a dish. Call 01482 216306 or visit www.1884wineandtapas bar.co.uk Where to stay Rest your head in Victorian surroundings, at the Mercure Hull Royal Hotel. Its pretty façade makes it one of the city’s landmarks, and you’ll find it handy for most attractions as it’s centrally located. Rooms from £50 per person per night. DAY TWO What to do
Discover more about life at sea with a visit to The Deep – a huge aquarium that’s home to 3,500 marine species, including sharks, rays and penguins. For less lively (but no less fascinating) encounters, consider a trip to Hull and East Riding Museum, where you can come nose to trunk with a woolly mammoth, as well as investigating dinosaur bones, an Iron Age sword and treasures from the Middle Ages. The Deep tickets £12.50 adults, £10.50 children. Call 01482 381000 or visit www.thedeep.co.uk Hull and East Riding Museum is free. Call 01482 300300 or visit www.hullcc.gov.uk Stop for lunch, coffee and cake or afternoon tea at Fudge Restaurant. There’s everything from homemade pies to gourmet burgers, sweet potato salad to sausage rolls hot from the oven. And as the name might suggest, you get a delicious piece of homemade fudge with your bill. Prices around £7-8 for a meal. Call 01482 441019 or visit www.fudgefood.co.uk
