In issue 264 we published a pattern to make a dresses for poverty stricken girls around the world who have never worn a dress, let alone owned one that’s been specially made for them! Since then we’ve been inundated with hundreds of beautiful, handmade dresses by our kind and generous readers. We wanted to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has taken the time to make these charming clothes. We’ve passed them onto the charity and will keep you updated with their work.
Five years ago I saw a sign in a fabric shop from Liverpool Macmillan Nurses who wanted fabric bags made for their ladies using syringe drivers – the small battery operated pumps are attached to patients via a tube that provide a continuous form of medication in chemo. Patients were previously using carrier bags. I designed a bag, with instructions, and was overwhelmed with the response from the nurses about the difference it made. So I put together a website www.makingforcharity.co.uk and Facebook page www.facebook.com/makingforcharity where instructions could be downloaded for free.
Since then I have sent out starter packs all over the country, and have helped volunteers sew over 25,000 syringe driver bags. I was thrilled to see the instructions for the bag in a recent edition of Yours. I’m sure that after reading your article lots more people will feel inspired to help crafting for good causes. A huge thank you for sharing this information. Julie Taylor, Liverpool
