Heal your headache in minutes

With just four simple steps you can say goodbye to those annoying headaches

- By Rebecca Speechley

Release tension

Tension at the base of your skull can cause headaches. Try this exercise from Lynne Robinson, founder of Body Control Pilates. Lie on your back, knees bent and feet hip-width apart. Trace an imaginary figure of eight with your nose. Repeat three times then change direction. Now imagine the figure of eight lying on its side. Trace again three times before changing direction. Finish by nodding your head forward, drawing the chin down and lengthening the back of your neck.

Take a moment

Meditation could help to make headaches and migraines less painful and reduce frequency, according to US researchers. Find somewhere quiet to sit for a few minutes, with your eyes closed. To clear your mind, focus on breathing in and out through your nose, acknowledge any thoughts that come into your head and let them pass. It’s a great way to ease your stress levels which in turn could help to lift your headache. Visit www.yours.co.uk/mindfulmeditation for more.

Get some air

Step outside and take some deep breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth, to help relieve tension and ease stress. If the sun is shining it could also help you get some much-needed Vitamin D. Recent research found that people with low Vitamin D levels are more likely to experience regular headaches.

Have a glass of water

When you have a headache, pour a large glass of water and sip it steadily. One-in-five people don’t drink enough water every day. “Dehydration can contribute to headaches, migraines, dizziness, irritability and even affect your ability to concentrate,” says nutritionist Shona Wilkinson (www.superfooduk.com). You should aim to drink eight glasses of water a day to prevent dehydration, and if you’re exercising or the weather is warm you’ll need to drink more.
